Round Two of the 2018 Golf World Cairns FNQGA Pennant was hosted at Mossman GC today (Sunday 14-Oct).
The 75 mm of rain that the Mossman GC course had last night was a little too late to really green up the whole course for the day, however the greens played extremely well and even caught a few players off guard with their consistency and pace.
Innisfail versus Cairns
Innisfail Club Stalwart Andrew Rose fought out a great match against Matt Spilsbury, winning 1 up to deny Cairns a clean sweep in in A Grade. 4 matches to 1 may have been the end result however in 3 of their 4 wins the Cairns team highest winning margin was only 3 holes to 1. Also keep in mind, regular Cairns Captain and FNQGA Champion Frank Power hasn’t been sighted this season so far so competition within the Cairns A Grade side is very strong.
In B Grade, Innisfail bounced back in style after last week’s loss to defeat the current champions 3 matches to 2, and again there was no real easy wins with all matches going to at least the 15th hole.
In C Grade, Cairns returned to the winner’s podium with a 3 matches to 2 win, and did so very strongly in a couple of matches.
Mareeba versus HMBGC
After last week’s win and strong showing against Innisfail in A Grade, Mareeba were expected to give HMBGC a run for their money. Unfortunately they didn’t get the result, and whilst HMBGC won all matches, 2 matches were decided on the 18th hole, two on the 17th hole and one on the 16th hole.
In B Grade, HMBGC certainly made an early statement about their intentions, winning 3 matches to 2 very convincingly. Even the usually ever reliable “Mr B Grade” Bruce Gilmore is 0 from 2 for the season for Mareeba.
C Grade saw HMBGC victors with 3 matches to 2, however Mareeba Captain Gav Smith is looking to clone Elso Iuretigh’s form for the rest of the season after his Hole in One two weeks ago as well as his 9 holes to 8 win today.
Gordonvale versus Atherton
A Grade saw Atherton bounce back from last week’s 4 to 1 match loss to do the same to Gordonvale this week. Gordonvale’s Ty Williams late season Club Open form wasn’t with him either going down to Atherton’s Josh Barr 5 holes to 4 with the remaining 4 matches all at least going to the 16th hole.
In B Grade, Chook Hendrie obviously enjoyed swapping being the drinks cart driver to playing, leading Gordonvale’s B Grade side to a 3 matches to 2 win. Again the matches were very close results with nearly all going to at least the 16th hole.
Gordonvale’s C Grade side lead by their well-travelled Vets Player Alan Dwyer defeated Atherton 3 matches to 2. The stand out match however was Jeff Bochow’s 6 holes to 5 win over Luke Moule.
Thanks to Mossman’s Geoff Goodwin, Lisa Smith and the Club House/Golf Shop staff and Matt Coulthard and his team on course, feedback in talking to players from a few teams this afternoon was extremely positive and complimentary of the day. The service and also that the pace of play has been really good this week as it was last week; thanks to all players in these two rounds for their assistance in this, the camaraderie has been great along with plenty of good natured competitiveness.
Next week sees Atherton hosting, with the early word of slick fast greens much the same as it was for their Club Open and Club Championships this year. Keep in mind also that Atherton have in play a temporary green on their 16th hole due to the removal and rebuild of the old one.
Draw, catering and playing details will be available later this week.
